In our minds Belladonna has been most often associated with the Italian expression “bella donna” meaning of beautiful lady. The topic here is not about feminine the gender, but, the plant bearing the same name. Most of us are probably more familiar with the term Deadly nightshade, death berries, devil’s cherries, poison black cherries, dwayberry, or Devil’s Berries.
Belladonna has its origins in Europe, its leaves and roots used in medical remedies throughout the ages. Historically, one of the more well-known uses were by Italian women, who used the berry juice to dilate their pupils for increased attractiveness.
Belladonna can be toxic in large doses, especially to the very young. It can be easily purchased at many health food stores or online. Found as an ingredient in some prescriptions, homeopathic and over the counter meds. In other words, you may find it anywhere.
In 2010, the risk of Belladonna in “Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets” became of such great concern that the company voluntarily recalled the product. The problem being that the

Caring for someone with dementia be it your parents or spouse will be one of the most difficult challenges of your life. Watching the person, you love slip away into a world where they are no longer able to distinguish real threats from those imagined. Now, unable or disinterested in performing personal hygiene (bathing, oral care, and changing clothes) tasks because the steps have become too complicated and confusing, your help with simple activities like brushing teeth or scrubbing dentures can raise fear. However, poor oral hygiene can lead to health problems, like periodontal disease, kidney infection, gum disease, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and pneumonia. With dementia, time is never on your side because it causes changes in the brain that make the disease grow progressively worse.
What Is Dementia
It can have multiple causes. In some cases, it is reversible when triggered (mimic) by:
- Medications
- High fever
- Vitamin deficiency
- Dehydration
- Head injury
- Over medication
- Exposure to poisons (heavy metals, pesticides, manganese, lead)
- Thyroid gland problems
- Anoxia (hypoxia) not enough oxygen reaching the brain
- Brain tumors
However, dementia is not reversible when resulting from:

Breath odor can be caused by disease, personal hygiene, dry mouth from medications and the aging process.
What is Sialorrhea
Sialorrhea is a weakness or difficulty with the swallowing reflex. Drooling occurs when saliva accumulates and begins to overflow. Excess mucus becomes most dangerous when sleeping because of the potential for choking.
The onset of Sialorrhea may occur after a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or Bells Palsy (paralysis or weakness of the facial nerves).
