Women are especially embarrassed by bad breath and go through great lengths to conceal it if they are aware that they have it. If your wife has breath odor this may be a good time to see if any of the following are true:
- Onset of Menopause
- Pregnancy
- Medications
- Periodontal disease
- Gingivitis
Possible Causes
We seldom speak about how changes in breath odor can be caused by pregnancy and menopause.
The one thing that these 2 stages in life have in common is a sudden shift or imbalance of hormones.
If your wife is moving towards mid-life at some point she is going to experience a reduction of estrogen causing dry mouth. As we all know dry mouth is a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and bad breath. The loss of estrogen can increase the risk of periodontal disease. To relieve symptoms associated with menopause and post menopause estrogen supplements may be helpful.

Dealing with bad breath from a stranger, friend or casual acquaintance is difficult enough, but when you have to live eat and sleep with that person every day it can really become a challenge. Confronting your husband or spouse can lead to hurt feelings and arguments. The tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. No where is this more evident than in what is commonly called white or geographic tongue. One of the first noticeable signs is a thin biofilm or coating on the surface of the tongue usually appearing white, yellow or sometimes black in coloration. It is often accompanied by cracks, grooves or fissures within the tongue allowing bacteria and germs to hide and flourish leading to bad breath (halitosis).

Breath odor can be caused by disease, personal hygiene, dry mouth from medications and the aging process.
What is Sialorrhea
Sialorrhea is a weakness or difficulty with the swallowing reflex. Drooling occurs when saliva accumulates and begins to overflow. Excess mucus becomes most dangerous when sleeping because of the potential for choking.
The onset of Sialorrhea may occur after a stroke, Parkinson’s disease or Bells Palsy (paralysis or weakness of the facial nerves).
