Mesothelioma: Symptoms Claims Causes And Treatment

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Diffuse pleural mesothelioma Malignant mesothelioma is not lung cancer but is a cancer of the lining of the lungs. Lung cancer is a malignancy occurring in the lung. Some literature about the two cancers make these differences blurred leading to a misconception that they are the same. They are not.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos fibers affecting the:

  • Pleural (cancer of tissue surrounding the lungs)
  • Pericardial (tissue surrounding the heart)
  • Peritoneal (surrounding tissue of the abdomen for example liver, bowel)
  • Testicular (thickening of the ducts and glands in the testes)

There is no cure at this time. Doctors hope to prolong life expectancy through cancer treatments and surgery when indicated. Like any fatal disease, life expectancy improves if caught early.

Getting Mesothelioma

Diagnosis is not always easy because there is a long latency period from 10-50 years after asbestos exposure before symptoms appear.

Exposure to asbestos can come from working in high risk professions. Indirect exposure can come from contact with those who work in high risk industries. This can be from family members and friends who carry fibers on their clothing. If you clean clothes that contains fibers. If you live in an area where asbestos industries are located, you are at risk.

The danger comes from unseen fibers that travel through the air. When we inhale, we take these tiny particles into our lungs. The evidence of which may not be known for over a generation because of the long latency period.

Other substances also pose a threat.

  • Zeolite (found in the soil from the region of Anatoli Turkey)
  • Erionite (a naturally occurring fibrous mineral found in volcanic ash) it is a carcinogen.

Mesothelioma Malignant Or Benign

In the media, we usually hear about Mesothelioma in its malignant form. However, it can be benign and may display many of the same symptoms. Unlike its malignant counterpart, it usually responds to surgery and is not life threatening.

However, it is sometimes is a precursor to a later malignant form.

What Are High Risk Asbestos Industries

There are many professions causing direct contact with asbestos. You may not even realize exposure has occurred.

Brushing Teeth After A Stroke

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Having a stroke can be devastating. Paralysis, memory loss and speech impairment can make simple activities nearly impossible. Often the patient or our loved ones do not even remember daily activities like teeth brushing. For the times they do remember the loss of dexterity has made it a long and time consuming task.

If the loved one is a parent then it is especially painful to watch because memories of what they use to be like keep flooding your mind. But we must deal with the situation at hand which means that we will have to assume the role of caregiver or hire someone in this capacity temporarily and sometimes even permanently.
Making sure a parent continues brushing teeth after a stroke is not only good oral hygiene but will help prevent periodontal disease, discomfort and a host of health problems that can be avoided.

The Connection Between Stroke And Periodontal Disease

It has been long suspected by researchers that oral bacteria responsible for periodontal and gum disease can contribute to stroke and heart attack.

Your Teen’s Bad Breath Methamphetamines?

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Methamphetamine CrystalsMethamphetamine a synthetic drug is a highly addictive odorless white crystalline powder. A derivative of amphetamines Meth has a bitter taste and is easily dissolved in water.

It was first made in 1893 by a Japanese chemist (Nagai Nagayoshi) from ephedrine.

In 1919 Akira Ogata made crystallized meth.

By 1944 the FDA had approved methamphetamine (desoxyn) as treatment for:

  • Narcolepsy
  • Post encephalitic parkinsonism
  • Hay fever
  • Depression
  • Alcoholism
  • Cerebral arteriosclerosis

Later approvals were removed. At this time methamphetamine is FDA approved for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and short term obesity (a few weeks).

During World War II meth was used by military on both sides of the Atlantic keeping soldiers fighting when under exhaustion from lack of sleep and hunger. The Germans dispensed it under the name Pervitin

Meth has been used in bronchial inhalers and decongestants. It is a more potent stimulant than amphetamine because at comparable levels crank is absorb into the brain much quicker and its harmful effects on the central nervous system longer lasting.

Ingesting methamphetamine releases a sudden and massive surge of neurotransmitters in the brain.

  • Serotonin (mood swings such as depression, being anxious)
  • Norepinephrine (arousal, flight or fight response)
  • Dopamine (feelings of pleasure, euphoria)

Addiction occurs rapidly and as tolerance builds up an ever increasing dosage is needed to achieve the same effect.

One of the most distinguishing signs of methamphetamine use is the chemical smell on the breath (bad breath odor). Long-term meth use can result in what is known as meth mouth.

What is Meth Mouth

This is tooth decay on a massive scale. Teeth become blackened, rotted and may eventually fall out. Restoration may not be possible. Meth mouth is no where more evident than in our nations prisons.

The American Dental Association warns parents and dentists to be concerned about teenagers and young adults who show sudden and unexplained tooth decay. Since meth

Should All States Require Dental Assistant Licensure

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Is your dentist’s assistant licensed or certified? What do you know about your doctor’s dental assistant? What you don’t know may hurt you. Many states do not require entry level dental assistants be licensed, certified, complete a training program within a college/university or technical school. They can be hired and trained on the job with no prior experience. Legally they need only be under the supervision of a state licensed dentist. States do regulate the duties that entry level dental assistants can perform even when under a supervising dentist. But there is no uniform standard throughout the USA.

Can Anorexia Cause Tooth Decay

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Anorexia Nervosa is a serious eating disorder that usually surfaces around early adolescence in teen girls affecting women more than any other group. It is typically seen in middle to upper income groups and Caucasians. Psychologically the condition has been characterized by obsessive fears and desire to control ones body.  The behavior of an anorexic is an endless cycle of excessive exercising, enemas, laxatives, diuretics, diet pills and food restriction to obtain weight loss; Frequently resembling those starving in third world countries.

One of the hidden risks of prolonged eating disorders is a decalcification (perimylolysis) of teeth or thinning of tooth enamel. Teeth may become so eroded (rotten, decayed) that they will have to be removed.

The constant onslaught of (gastric) stomach acid due to vomiting or regurgitation is a breeding ground for gum disease and tooth decay.

Anorexia and bulimia can be very similar in that both may involve induced vomiting.

There are two types of anorexics

There are over 25 STD’s and infections that can be transmitted through oral sex. To add more fuel to the fire if you are unfortunate enough to catch a high risk human papilloma virus (HPV) like HPV 16; it can lead to oropharyngeal cancer (more common in men). This type of cancer effects the middle of the throat, tonsils, walls of the pharynx, base of the tongue and soft palate.

Results from a study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center shows risks increased for participants who had more than six oral sex partners during a lifetime. Raising susceptibility to 8.6 times more likely to catch a HPV linked cancer.

If you perform oral sex on a partner who is infected with an STI (sexually transmitted  infection) and you have an open wound (abrasion, rash, cut, canker sores, blisters, ulcers, periodontal disease) inside or on the mouth again you increase the odds of contracting an STD.

When there is an exchange of infected bodily fluids (blood, semen, vaginal fluids, menstrual blood, infected matter) from your partner’s genetalia. Even kissing someone with bleeding gums that has an STI can increase your chances of contracting the disease.

Brushing or flossing the teeth before oral sex can also increase risk of infection from accidental scrapes of the gums or tongue.Herpes Lip Cream

Once the infection occurs it travels throughout the bloodstream.

Green Tea Bad Breath Remedy Or Fluoride Poisoning

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Green tea is made from the leaves of the Camelia Sinensis plant.

It has been used in toothpastes and mouthwashes to increase their effectiveness against

bacteria that causes bad breath and tooth decay.

Made from two leaves and a bud, the most potent green tea is from the first harvest

(first flush) single-estate (picked from the same plantation) and harvested around

early spring. Green tea contains Fluoride.

Some scientists question the popular belief that Fluoride prevents tooth decay. Now

concerned that government sanctioned Fluoridation of water has caused dental fluorosis

(staining and pitting of the teeth) resulting in tooth decay. In children this is the

first sign of Fluoride overdose.
