Canker Sores Fever Blisters
Often canker sores (mouth ulcers) are mistakenly confused for fever blisters or cold sores. To help clarify matters, fever blisters (also known as cold sores or herpes simplex) are contagious. The lesion appears most often around the lips, under the nose or chin. Canker sores on the other hand are not contagious. It is a single or multiple small ulcers (crater) inside the mouth that can last from 1 to 2 weeks. They usually go away on the own. But can be irritated if hot, acidic or spicy foods are eaten. No one knows for sure what causes canker sores but many doctors believe the menstrual cycle, lip biting, stress, allergies or lack of proper or nutrition may be a factor (B12, folic acid, iron). The condition is most often seen in teens, women and those in their 20’s.
Canker Sores On Tongue
These painful noncancerous ulcers can appear almost anywhere on the inside of the mouth (tongue, soft palate, cheek inner surface and gum base).
Preventing Canker Sores
To help avoid recurrent canker sores, try avoiding toothpastes and mouthwash containing the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a detergent/soap used as a foaming agent) which can cause dry mouth. It is also a common ingredient in household cleaners and some automotive products. SLS can cause damage to oral tissue.
Avoid trauma to the inside of the mouth by hard brushing, cut down on hard foods (pretzels, potato chips, candies).
In essence stay away or be careful with foods that can cut or damage the inside of the mouth.
